Phono del Sol, SF’s most laid back day festival, is back for another year to highlight local acts and bring back a few of music’s most coveted acts on Saturday, July 9th.
Phono del Sol, hosted by local non-profit music publication The Bay Bridged and Tiny Telephone, is now in it’s sixth year of production and invites an all ages crowd to enjoy a range of musical genres. Based on our experience attending the festival last summer (King Tuff, Tanlines, Sonny & The Sunsets), we can assure you that this affordable, one day festival is the perfect summer hang out. Portrero del Sol park provides a relaxed space with great stage views, and the schedule allows for attendees to see every act if desired. If you need to take it easy in between sets, the grassy hills, beer garden and food truck offerings are around all day for intermittent breaks.
The big names on the lineup this year consist of Alvvays, Chairlift, Born Ruffians, and Mr. Little Jeans—all of which have been graciously welcomed by the Bay in the past and have sold out shows on record to show for it. Aside from the headliners, we’re excited to see all the Oakland and SF-based artists take the stage. Here’s a quick synopsis of what to expect from this year’s diverse group of local talent.
Although The She’s have been making music in San Francisco since their middle school days, they’ll be playing their surf pop jams at PDS for the first time. Country-blues singer-songwriter Dick Stusso has had a spotlight on him ever since he released his full length album Nashville Dreams/Sings The Blues on Vacant Stare Records this past fall. The Seshen has developed their soulful, electro infused R&B sound over their last few years in Oakland and will certainly move you in one way or another. Hot Flash Heat Wave recently teamed up with OIM Records and is gaining in the ranks for their easy-on-the-ears style garage pop. San Francisco-based rapper Adam Vida, whom recently went through a name change and transition, is sure to knock people over with this thoughtful songwriting layered over dance worthy beats that anyone can get down with.
