ICYMI—Last week, Ty Segall and his wild band of Muggers played a surprise, last-minute set at The Griffin in Los Angeles.
Yes, Ty Segall returned to sleepy Atwater Village for a secret show last Wednesday, but this time with his band The Muggers. Keep in mind that Ty’s been The Griffin’s infamous, although sporadic, Monday night booker for the bar ever since he moved back down here from San Francisco.
Last Wednesday went a little different, however. The gig was announced on social media just a mere couple of hours before they went on—and note that they were the only band that went on. Also, it might’ve been the most stripped-down version of their performance since they started playing live in support of Emotional Mugger (Drag City). There was no freakish, creepy baby-mask (“Slopo”), no haunting make-up, no stage, and no gimmicks (passing out candy or shots of tequila). Just a straight-up set on the floor of the bar surrounded by a hundred sweaty fans.
It was Ty Segall and The Muggers in the rawest way possible, which was still pretty weird and creepy in the end.
