The Bay Area’s Cough Syrup Kids will be releasing their first self-titled record on Rotted Tooth Recordings. Watch their LP promo video for a taste.
Cough Syrup Kids’ upcoming record will be released on Chicago based “cult” label, Rotted Tooth Recordings. The label has put out releases by similarly noisy, blistering punk bands such as Running, Thee Oh Sees, Oozing Wound, and Black Pus (Lightning Bolt). While their music is meant for modern ears, the story of how they formed is based on their younger selves.
Cough Syrup Kids started one night when Kyle Day and Danny Kendrick were having a conversation about growing up in suburbia in Southern California–and how fucking weird it is. Many can relate to being that kid that grew up in the suburbs, in search of drugs that would temporarily remove themselves from their numbing surroundings “because essentially you are completely bored,” says Day. “Anyone who was a loser from suburbia can relate to this record.”
Kyle admits that he and the band took triple Cs with cough syrup one night in 2015 to revive feelings from their teenage years. They then wrote and recorded all ten tracks of the record at Kyle’s home studio in Oakland known as The Grassy Null. “It’s a crazy collage of ‘did I just hear that?’ moments” accompanied by charged, woozy synths also notable in his other project Beekeepers.
Watch the video below, featuring Kyle cooking up a delightful culinary concoction with warped VHS effects and a teaser of the record. The first track is “Small Pox,” described as the album’s anthem track. The second bursting synth snippet is “Nicht Intakt” and the third is a fuzzy, spoken word track titled “The Cough.” The band is formed of Kyle Day (drums, synth, vocals), Danny Kendrick (guitar, synth, bass) and Brendan Casey (bass).
The record will be released later this year. The LP jackets are being printed on grocery bags instead of standard vinyl materials.
