I followed Bay Area bands out to Austin to soak in this year’s SXSW without a wristband.
If you had been following The Bait Shop the last two years, you’d have noticed that many of our favorite local bands from California that we’ve shared music for and taken photos of were on the infinite black hole of a music festival bill for SXSW. So I attempted to document their shows throughout the week but somehow ended up seeing the same bands over and over, preventing me from reaching my photography goals. I bunked with Jay Som and Babewatch for the week, managing to see Jay Som about six times all over Austin. I was able to catch bands I originally hadn’t planned on seeing by wandering into free shows, like Caddywhompus, Priests, and LVL UP. I was waiting to see Vagabon in SF last week but caught her set a few hours before flying back to the Bay. There was no limit to how many times the crew I was with wanted to see Palm, Mothers, and Ian Sweet since many bands perform at least once a day, if not more. In no particular order, here are the bands caught by showcase.
Stereogum at Hole in the Wall
Levitation at Hotel Vegas
Secretly Canadian at Barracuda
Taco Bell’s Feed The Beat at Bar 96
Adhoc at Cheer Up Charlies
Post Trash at Beerland
She Shreds at Las Cruxes
Urban Outfitters at Space 24
Polyvinyl Records at Cheer Up Charlies
